Breastfeeding While Pregnant Is Safe, Truth Or Fallacy?

As you get pregnant again, it does not mean you have to stop breastfeeding your child because of the pregnancy. However, before doctors did believe that breastfeeding will actually take nutrients away from the fetus. But that is not the case. But some people still continue to believe in this thought even up to now. The decision will really depend on you, since you will really be the one to make the final decision as to stop breastfeeding your toddler or not. Never depend on other people when making a choice.

Valid Reasons Why You Must Stop
When you feel constantly drained of energy, this may be a reason for you to stop breastfeeding. As the child grows, he may also learn to bite which can be another reason for you to stop breastfeeding. Basically, our bodies tend to also tell us to stop and it needs a break when it will run out of milk eventually. Also, mastitis can be a condition which will really let you stop breastfeeding. Mastitis is a kind of mammary infection which may be a cause of breast engorgement.

Encourage Weaning
When you plan to stop because you are pregnant be sure that you are going to do this for the right reasons. By the time the child reaches a certain age then it might be the best for you to stop breastfeeding. But you have to remember that it is not proper to just stop it abruptly. The result if you abruptly stop it is for your child to wonder why it is being taken away. There is a big chance for him to think discouraged of the new baby if you stop it at the same time as the new baby’s existence. Or they will think they have done something bad. Parents may be a less guilty when children decide to wean their selves on the act of breastfeeding. You may slowly wean him/her off, or do it cold turkey. Bad results can happen if you opt for cold turkey. You can choose to limit his/her feeding times to certain hours and gradually as time passes take away more. Any traumatic event will be avoided and the child can basically do the stopping by himself.

Choose to Continue Feeding
Talk with your doctor when you want to continue to breastfeed while pregnant. Do not expect, however, that the doctor would always agree on what you have decided upon. The physician may see some contraindications with your health status that you cannot continue feeding. You have to understand well the reason why you are not allowed to continue. It is because of your health or merely his beliefs? You may seek another opinion if it is just his belief. It can be stressful to be pregnant and it is a great relief to know that you have who can be with you during these times.  You can get through this with the advices and help you get with your family, friends, relatives and loved ones. Be kind in telling them that you will be the one to make the final choice at the end of the day. You may also look for help from a support group in your area so you have someone to vent to or talk about these issues. If not, you can join a support group via online.
