Get Federal ID, Identification Number for 2009, 2010

We will start at the beginning. What is a federal identification number? An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number or (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal revenue Service.

It is a nine digit number, always begins with the number nine, and has a seven or eight in the forth digit place value.

Who Needs an ITIN?

The Internal Revenue Service issues these numbers to people who do not have or who are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number. These numbers are issued regardless of immigration status because both resident and nonresident aliens may have United States tax return and payment obligations to the U.S.

How do I obtain an ITIN?

You have to use Form W-7. You will need to attach your federal income tax return form and provide proof of identity. Now you are probably wondering what documents qualify for proof of identity.
